Berry Stoneware Pitcher, Wheel-Thrown and Glazed – France, c. 1960–1970

An antique glazed stoneware pitcher, possibly attributable to a workshop in the Berry region of France, made circa 1960–1970.

The piece features a characteristic form of French stoneware pitchers from this period, with a generous, slightly rounded body, a narrow neck opening into a broad flared rim, a shaped pouring lip, and a loop handle.

The decoration relies entirely on the character of the clay and glaze. The surface, in shades of brown, taupe, beige and ochre, is accented with fine blue-grey speckles and displays numerous variations resulting from the firing process. The neck is particularly distinctive, with a succession of fine thrown rings adding relief and creating subtle variations of light beneath the glossy glaze.

The interior is also glazed. The slightly irregular character of the glaze and the variations in colour are characteristic of wheel-thrown and glazed stoneware, typical of French production in the second half of the 20th century.

The attribution to a Berry stoneware production is based on the form, throwing technique and glaze characteristics, which show similarities with certain stoneware productions from the region.
