Oval Ivory Porcelain Vegetable Dish – Manufacture Théodore Haviland – Limoges, c. 1936–1945

An antique ivory porcelain vegetable dish from Limoges, made by Manufacture Théodore Haviland.

With its generously shaped oval form, this vegetable dish features two broad side handles with elegant lines, as well as a separate lid topped with a handle-shaped finial.

The piece is made of ivory porcelain with a glossy enamel finish, its slightly warm tone particularly enhanced by the absence of painted decoration.

The distinctive feature of this model is its relief decoration inspired by wickerwork: a broad frieze of interlaced lines and crisscross patterns runs around the lid and continues across the upper part of the vegetable dish. This delicate relief adds rhythm and texture to an otherwise understated and elegant form.

The overall design, with its generous proportions, finely shaped handles and wickerwork-inspired relief decoration, reflects the spirit of models from the 1920s. However, this particular piece bears a backstamp corresponding to a later period of production.

The green backstamp visible underneath, “LIMOGES / THEODORE / HAVILAND / FRANCE,” corresponds to the 1936–1945 period for Théodore Haviland productions.

This vegetable dish is therefore particularly interesting for the contrast between a form that was probably designed in the 1920s and a production date that the backstamp places between 1936 and 1945. It can notably be paired with the similarly styled soup tureen, which we date to the 1920s and are also offering for sale, making it possible to recreate or complete a service set.
