Celadon Porcelain Cachepot – Limoges, 2nd Half of the 20th Century

Celadon porcelain cachepot by an unknown manufacturer, probably made during the 20th century. The piece presents a remarkable celadon-colored paste, that is to say a mass-tinted porcelain, and not a white porcelain covered with a cetadon enamel.

The form is particularly elaborate, with a slightly curved cylindrical body resting on a moulded circular foot accented with vertical ribs. The upper rim is enhanced with several moulded bands and a regular raised frieze.

The decoration is entirely worked in the porcelain itself and consists of raised foliage, flowers, clusters and botanical motifs arranged across the body of the cachepot. Two applied mascarons depicting faces, serving as handles, are positioned on either side of the body and incorporated into the ornamental design.

The overall design evokes a classical and Neo-Renaissance decorative vocabulary, combined with a highly ornamental execution characteristic of certain 20th-century Limoges porcelain productions. This piece was sourced in Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche, Haute-Vienne, in the historic area associated with Limoges porcelain.

No manufacturer's mark is visible on the underside. It is therefore not possible to attribute this cachepot to a specific manufacturer with certainty. Its discovery in Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche, a place of historical importance in connection with kaolin and Limoges porcelain, provides interesting provenance, but cannot on its own establish the manufacturer.
