Dinner Plate – Manufacture A. Giraud & Cie – Sauviat-sur-Vige, c. 1967–1979
Description
White Limoges porcelain plate with a scalloped shape and delicately undulating rim. The border is highlighted with fine gold trim and a refined repeating pattern of small brown-orange scrolls accented with gold.
Three sections of the border feature a stylised scrollwork motif, while the upper part of the plate bears an ornamental gold monogram composed of intertwined lines suggesting initials. A fine gold line also outlines the central area.
The piece is distinguished by the simplicity of its white ground, enhanced by decoration exclusively in gold and brown, as well as by the quality and fineness of its execution.
Good overall condition. A few very light signs of use may be present on the gilded decoration, with no significant impact on the overall appearance. A particularly decorative piece, equally interesting on its own or paired with other antique white and gold porcelain tableware.
The underside bears several marks: “A. Giraud & Cie Limoges”, “Giraud Limoges France” and “Limoges Sauviat 1836”. The Giraud manufactory became associated with porcelain production in Sauviat-sur-Vige from 1935. The designation A. Giraud & Cie is generally dated to the period 1967–1979, before the company adopted the name A. Giraud & Fils.
The “1836” appearing in the Sauviat mark therefore does not correspond to the date of manufacture of the plate; it refers to the age of the porcelain-making site.
