Consommé Cup / Bouillon Bowl in Fine Porcelain – Limoges, c. 1930

Consommé cup in Limoges porcelain, made in white porcelain with a glossy glaze. The manufacturer remains unknown, as the piece bears no stamp or maker’s mark on the underside allowing its precise attribution.

Of low, widely flared form, the cup features two delicately curved side handles adorned with elegant scrollwork in relief. It stands on a small foot whose modelling echoes the ornamental lines of the piece as a whole.

The originality of this cup lies in its decoration, revealed only when the piece is turned upside down. While the upper section appears relatively restrained and entirely white, the lower part reveals a particularly elaborate relief ornamentation. Almost “hidden” at first glance, this unexpected decoration creates a delightful surprise and gives the piece a distinctive and highly decorative character.

The care taken in the modelling, particularly in the handles, foot and underside, reflects an aesthetic approach that goes beyond the purely functional nature of this type of consommé cup.

Its size and form are characteristic of consommé cups, intended for serving broths and consommés at the table.
