Modernist Round White Porcelain Tureen – Limoges, c. 1970–1980

Elegant round covered tureen in white Limoges porcelain, made circa 1970–1980.

The piece is distinguished by a particularly sober and geometric silhouette. Its low, circular and slightly flared body rests on a discreet moulded foot and is fitted on either side with two rectangular handles featuring softened angles.

The broadly flattened lid follows the same search for simplicity. It is centred by a circular finial integrated into a wide concentric recess, creating a particularly graphic interplay of volumes. The piece is entirely free of painted decoration or gilded accents, relying solely on the purity of its form.

With its highly refined design, low circular silhouette, geometric handles and flattened lid, this tureen bears strong affinities with Raymond Loewy’s explorations in Limoges porcelain during the 1960s. Its form is particularly reminiscent of the Ariès model, created by Loewy for Bernardaud in 1967, although it cannot be identified as that model: the lid finial, in particular, is of a different design.

This stylistic relationship more broadly reflects the lasting influence of modernism and industrial design on Limoges porcelain forms during the second half of the 20th century.

The reverse bears the green mark “LIMOGES FRANCE”. No manufacturer’s name can be identified in the visible marking; the piece is therefore presented as a Limoges production, without attribution to a particular manufacturer.
