Antique Porcelain Saucer – Plum Blossom Decoration – Japan, c. 1891–1921

Antique Japanese porcelain saucer, decorated in cobalt blue on a white ground.

The decoration features a beautiful flowering plum tree, with sinuous, blossom-covered branches, incorporated into a natural and landscape composition. A richly ornamented border of stylized floral and botanical motifs frames the design.

The underglaze blue decoration belongs to the Japanese sometsuke tradition, characterized by the use of cobalt blue on white porcelain. The flowering plum (ume) is one of the major traditional motifs in Japanese decorative arts.

The reverse bears a small blue 日本 (NIPPON) mark.

This marking provides an important indication for dating Japanese export porcelain. The term NIPPON was used on Japanese porcelain from 1891; from 1921 onwards, the designation JAPAN gradually became standard.

The saucer can therefore be dated to c. 1891–1921, corresponding mainly to the late Meiji period and early Taishō period.

The style of the decoration and porcelain is consistent with Japanese export wares, particularly within the Arita/Hizen tradition. The specific manufacturer has not been identified.

Very good overall condition. No hairline cracks or obvious restoration. Minor irregularities in the decoration and surface may be consistent with the manufacturing process and age of the piece.
