Antique Glazed Stoneware Pitcher – Faïencerie de Digoin, 2nd half of the 20th Century

Beautiful glazed stoneware pitcher from the Digoin Pottery in Burgundy, France, most likely dating from the 1960s.

The piece has a simple, functional form, with a slightly curved cylindrical body, a narrower neck, a broad pouring spout and an elegantly arched handle. The stoneware has a speckled beige surface enhanced by a brown and honey-coloured glaze with irregular variations, giving the piece a warm, richly textured appearance.

The decoration is deliberately understated, consisting of horizontal lines accentuating the neck and the transition between the different sections of the body. A few glaze runs and variations in colour are characteristic of the firing process and contribute to the authentic character of the piece.

The underside bears a partially legible impressed mark, identifying the Digoin production.

Stoneware production in Digoin dates back to 1875. The pottery is particularly renowned for its utilitarian stoneware wares, including pitchers, jugs, tureens and water pots. Stoneware became widely used for its durability and watertight qualities, particularly from the late 19th century onwards.
