Large Glazed Stoneware Dish – France, c. 1970

Circular in shape and generous in size, the piece features a wide, slightly hollow basin surrounded by a thick, rounded rim. The turning marks are particularly visible on the inside, where the concentric lines left by the working of the clay fully contribute to the aesthetic of the piece.

The glaze, in shades of brown, ochre, olive, and earth, is punctuated by numerous mottled effects and small dark concentrations, characteristic of high-temperature firing. The variations in color and texture give the surface a very expressive depth, while the reverse, largely left visible, reveals the raw material of the stoneware.

A generously proportioned piece, which can be used as a large presentation platter, serving dish, tray, or decorative piece.
