Art Deco Coffee Set – Manufacture Chapus & Fils – c. 1928

Magnificent Art Deco Limoges porcelain set, comprising a coffee pot and a covered sugar bowl, made by Chapus & Fils and decorated by Lucien Michelaud, circa 1928–1933.

Particularly remarkable for the coherence of its design, this set offers a highly characteristic expression of the late 1920s and early 1930s Art Deco aesthetic. The porcelain, in a warm, luminous white, features geometric lines and carefully structured volumes. The handles and finial, with their stylized, architectural forms, fully embody this modern and refined aesthetic.

The contours are accented with fine platinum lines, remarkably well preserved. Their excellent condition enhances the elegance of the set and allows the original design to be fully appreciated.

Both pieces bear the marks of Chapus & Fils, Limoges, together with the mark of Lucien Michelaud, a porcelain manufacturer and decorator based in Limoges. This combination of marks allows the set to be precisely dated to 1928–1933, the period during which Jean Chapus and his sons operated their porcelain manufacture under this name.

Sets from this period bearing both marks are now less commonly encountered, and this compact combination of a coffee pot and covered sugar bowl displays a particularly strong Art Deco character. With its purity of line, restrained decoration and remarkable state of preservation, it is a fine example of Art Deco tableware produced in Limoges in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
