White Porcelain Creamer – Manufacture Jean Pouyat – Limoges, c. 1890-1900

Superb white porcelain creamer, produced by the Jean Pouyat manufactory, one of the most important historic houses of Limoges porcelain.

The piece captivates with the purity of its white and especially with its remarkably sculptural form. The generously curved body rests on a small circular foot. The neck blossoms into a widely open and slightly raised spout, while the particularly original handle is modeled in an organic and undulating movement that gives the whole great elegance.

Entirely white and devoid of painted decoration, this creamer highlights the quality of the porcelain and the craftsmanship of its form. This pursuit of perfection in whites and forms was precisely one of the great specialties of the Pouyat manufactory, whose white porcelains were particularly renowned.

The reverse shows two stamps. The green mark J.P. / L. France corresponds to the Jean Pouyat manufactory. A second mark, printed in red, bears the inscription P. Rougerie – Limoges – France. This association of marks is particularly interesting and suggests that the piece may have been produced by Pouyat and then intended for Pierre Rougerie's workshop for possible decoration.

A rare and very decorative piece, whose sophistication lies in its form rather than its ornamentation. It aptly illustrates the taste for high-quality white porcelains at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries.
