Engraved Glass Decanter – France, Mid-20th Century

Elegant antique decanter in clear engraved glass, by an unknown manufacturer, with a well-balanced silhouette featuring an ovoid body, a long cylindrical neck that is slightly flared, and a broad rolled rim.

The piece is distinguished by a decoration entirely worked into the glass, composed of fine engraved bands forming interlaced geometric motifs. A frieze of small interlocking ovals runs along the upper and lower edges of the main decoration, while the body is adorned with a regular network of arches and crossings, creating a particularly delicate guilloché effect.

The neck features a similar engraved frieze, creating a harmonious continuity throughout the decoration. The stopper, perfectly matched to the decanter, is topped with a substantial faceted glass ball. Its geometric cut catches and reflects the light beautifully, lending the piece a particularly refined appearance.

The overall effect is an elegant contrast between the transparency of the glass, the delicacy of the engraving and the brilliance of the faceted stopper. The quality of the decoration and the overall form reflect a fine example of 20th-century glassmaking.

No mark or signature allowing the manufacturer to be identified with certainty is visible. However, initials resembling “S S” appear inside the neck. At present, these do not allow the origin of the piece to be determined with certainty.

State: Good overall condition. Excellent transparency and brilliance. Very minor superficial scratches may be visible on the smooth areas upon close inspection and under direct light. Small chip visible on the stopper, which should be taken into account when assessing the condition.
